Warnings, Suspensions Update - 10/21

As WidgetBucks has launched, we’ve seen tremendous growth on our network and one of our big concerns as a PPC widget is click-fraud. Naturally, we have systems in place to detect click-fraud to ensure that it does not impact our advertisers and, in turn, the entire network of our thousands of publishers.

When our systems flag accounts with 10%, 20%, or even 90% (one customer even had 99%) of their clicks to be potentially fraudulent, we feel it's important to move swiftly because we take it seriously.

Going forward, as potential-click fraud is flagged within an account, we will issue an email with a three-day warning. This will allow time to dialogue with a publisher over the suspicious activity. For accounts with activity that is so egregiously fraudulent, we will suspend those publishers immediately and without warning.

Update -- as of Sunday, October 21 (9 am PDT)

As an addition to the original post above, over the past 2 days, WidgetBucks has suspended an undisclosed number of accounts that do not meet the network's Terms of Use, primarily related to click-fraud, but also for publishers not requesting permission to put widgets on primarily non-English language sites. Ad-only sites and sites with any pornography content are also not allowed, and have also resulted in suspensions. If an account is suspended for violating any of these terms, all earnings (commissions, bonuses, fees) are forfeited. A number of 3-day warnings were issued during the last 2 days as well.

When it comes to detecting fraud, we are currently using a number of key measurements to evaluate sites. We can detect sites where click fraud is occurring by evaluating conversion to sale and traffic trends, as well as CTR and audit/filter percentage. And in instances where a site has good CTR and conversion to sale ratios, that publisher would not be suspended in the event of occasional spikes in abnormal click traffic.

We're taking this course of action to protect our ecosystem of advertisers and thousands of publishers.

WidgetBucks publishers inquiring about login and account access should submit an email to help [at] widgetbucks [dot] com so specific concerns can be addressed on an individual account basis, rather than through this blog's comment board. Thank you.

click fraud is really a serious problem.. specially in google adsense.. *sigh*...

Click fraud is serious, but why don't you give us better information about payments? Paypal isn't fully available in my country and checks take forever to arrive. E-gold would be nice.

what about to place system to protects the publishers from clicks fraud

Unknown said...

I think this is a good thing...
I am glad that WidgetBucks are actually going to email the users FIRST before suspension...

I used to be with Google adsense until one of my site users thought he was being helpful by clicking the ads constantly which got me banned, but Google would not even give me the chance to prove that it was not me clicking the ads.

Keep up the good work WidgetBucks!

can i place widget ads on blog with indonesian primary language?

ECS said...

Maybe track the IP address of the website owner as they login and then compare that to the person clicking too much. This sort of protects the website owner from competitors just clicking to get them banned.

yea, as rob said,

is there going to be anyway for us to defend ourselves against malicious click fraud, some people get jealous and dont want others to succeed.

Jay Gee said...

That's my concern aswell, what if someone is out to kill my site and starts clicking the widgets to get me suspended.

And 10% is sometimes achievable, I can get around 8% with Google, given the fact that the widgets are more attractive - I think it may be possible.

I'm currently on 2% (when they load in time).

It's good to give a notice before suspension.

Just wonder which type of traffic is
acceptable--it doesn't state clearly
in the company's TOS.
I see some sites at traffic exchanges
with WidgetBucks ads on them. Any
idea if traffic exchanges are acceptable?
One other thing--the WidgetBucks site
loads rather slowly and it tends to
slow down any site with WB ads.

widgetbucks is going nice way but I hav got some queries.1) what about deleted widgets? 2) the customer care centre doesn't attend our queries 3)what about the payments in my country.Am i going to get payments in USD or INR(Indian Rs.)?
I would also like to inform widgetbucks that refrral programme of adsense is much better they give 255$ for every refrral that reaches the payout of 100$ and 2000$ bonous for 25 refrrals if they reach their payout within their respective 6 months.I would like widetbucks answer my query at ankil19@hotmail.com .Ya the plan of allowing people to have a dilogue for their defense in case of fraud clicks is a very good move better than adsense

Unknown said...

As you see everbody bored Adsense so you could be new adsense for webmasters but main problem people have problem about your payment.if you announce about payments it will good for both( you and webmasters )
thanks

Maybe, you can filter out fraudulent clicks coming from a publisher. Yahoo does the same.

So even if I fall asleep in front of the computer with the mouse in my hand I will be safe.

Technology of The Day said...

i agree with ashish

Tasha Chan said...

I agree that instead of terminating the publisher straight away, just make the fraudulent clicks worth zero.

@penulis: according to our terms of use, WidgetBucks widget code can only be placed on pages with content primarily in English. Widgets must not be displayed on any page with content primarily in an unsupported language, without prior written consent from Mpire (the company that created WidgetBucks). Please contact us at info [at] widgetbucks [dot] com with your site information so we can evaluate your site to ensure it meets our terms of service. Thanks.

@ankil: an area within MyWidgets is coming shortly (early this week) that shows deleted widgets (and related earnings). Your payments will come in USD. Our referral program is competitive in the marketplace of companies our size (i.e. those without a $200 million market cap like Google). Thanks. - Dean

Yeah, I don't know why but suprisingly I can not login in my account again. Did not get any warning, in fact got an e-mail from sean, telling me what a great job I did with my websites:

Hi Bunea,

I’m writing to congratulate you on how well your WidgetBucks widgets are doing.

They are getting a large number of impressions and a good number of clicks. We’re very happy you’ve decided to use WidgetBucks on your Manele sites. The Movie category you picked is obviously doing well with you audience. I’m impressed by your use of more than one shape widget on a page, and by the prominent placement of the large 660x330 widget. You may want to show related electronics products, such as DVD players in some of your widgets, since these earn high amounts per click.

I would like to answer any questions you may have, or hear suggestions from you on how to make the widgets better. If there are other specific product categories that you’d like to see, we can create them for you.

Please let me know if there is anything we can do. Thanks,

Seán

A note to all publishers who are inquiring about login and account access: specific questions should be submitted to help [at] widgetbucks [dot] com, where we can addressed your concerns on an individual basis. Thank you.

Wolf said...

but you never answer those e-mails!!!!!!!!!!!

Webster said...

I used to work on support emails. Beleive me I know its frustrating to those addressing duplicate emails from the same people that are quite often repetitive. Rest assured people your emails are being read. However they are answered in the order they are received. You can trust that if an email is sent it will be read. Any other emails you send thereafter is just clogging up the inbox. I hope this helps the support team.

Dean Jutilla said...

@emile: Thanks for your understanding and sharing your experience with the rest of those on this thread. We are indeed answering the large amount of emails just as you described - in the order in which they were received. Thanks in advance to everyone for your patience. - Dean

Unknown said...

DEan, are account issues a glitch with the system or does it mean termination of these accounts?

Dean Jutilla said...

@Sameer: There is a much higher likelihood that account access issues being experienced today are directly related to account suspension vs. a system glitch.

Unknown said...

Dean, We could get suspended without receiving any suspension notices/emails?

Unknown said...

Dean, how can it be possible that I today get "congrats" e-mail from sean and tomorrow I get my account suspended? Can you exaplin this to me? And yesterday I got another e-mail telling me that I must activate my acccount. And in my account I got ZERO revenue, and not even the refferals were ZERO. I think you are embarasing yourselves in front of a large amount of publishers...

Anonymous said...

Hi WB, I had a message saying that the adcode was put on ad-only, non-english or porn sites but my sites are all in English with goo contents but still suspended and I could not log in now, please explain. Is that your system is not smart enough to do so? I take click fraud seriously but now good publisher suspended then I do know what to say

Unknown said...

You should protect the users from sabbotage.
I run few big sites including a free hosting company and got banned from google for invalid clicks. Wich is not true, as i couldn't risk my bussiness for few lauzy bucks...
So, i'm afraid here in WB will be the same scenario, someone will spamm my sites with invalid clicks and you suspend my account....
So, before suspension, check for sabottage...
My sites have a CTR betwhen 0.15% and 0.73% is that a problem?

Another thing i see, when you change category for your widgets, all the clicks in current day change with the new cpc... i saw it's corrected by audit, but still, a problem.

Jehzeel Laurente said...

Hi, where can I report If I have noticed that somebody is making fraud clicks in my widgets???

Unknown said...

Another thing, shound't we be able to see our conversions precentage?
It would be a good thing as we'd know if we'll continue or not, before we get suspended for low conversions...
I'm very couriuod about my conversion precentage...

Anonymous said...

Yes click fraud is a big problem. One suggestion would be to have some sort of pay per impression in place mixed in with the pay per click ads. That would cut out allot of click fraud as only the widget bucks admin would know which ad is paid for the click and which is just on the impression.
I know there are other ad networks who do this and it is certainly effective against click fraud.

I see that click fraud is really a serious matter.
But what about my situation, i put the widget in my newly launched blog. And on the first week i received no clicks because of the poor traffic i have, but on the second week, surprisingly, i received lots of clicks which i did not know where it came from.
Once i am not aware that this is a ppc and i clicked the ads not to get cash but i want to see the ads i am catering to. I just thought that it is like the widget from AuctionAds, but when i learned that it is a ppc program i never clicked my own ads again as i am familiar with Adsense not allowing such.

Maybe i am going to get a warning letter from you Admin of WidgetBucks but please consider that i never tried to do some fraudulent clicks as i want to earn from your program.

Jeremy Hall said...

I have no idea if my account is receiving any unauthorized or repeat clicks from my visitors because there is no way to see this in any report. I know I am not clicking the ads, but who knows what my site visitors may be doing.

I am concerned though because I received a decent number of click throughs in the first week of display, but now in the second I am not receiving any at all. I am wondering if it is because:

1) The same users are returning and clicking and therefore these clicks are being ignored

2) The reporting of WidgetBucks is flawed somehow

3) The fact that I cannot get anything other than camera deals to appear on my site has my site visitors bored with the ad.

A good ideea would be a field, with 3 options:
Good conversion rate, normal converson rate and bad conversion rate...
It would really help, as i want to continue with WB, but for that, i have to be sure i won't be suspended...
I run few big sites, and if i don't get paid, i'll loose serious money... so it's a big risk for me...

I guess if you have regular users that are members and join daily, and they see something on your widget that they like, and click on it you get credited..but what I would like to know if the same person clicked on the widget 2 weeks later or even 6 months later clicked on your ad...would you be credited for it? I mean how far back does the database keep track of ip addresses that click on the ad? If you merely have an online comunity where you have about 50 ppl on it, and they all see the ads, and click on them when something peeks their interest... if they click anymore running the ad would be pointless, wouldnt it?

Dean said in another post that WB have reached 25 million impressions in 7 days.So even 10% click ratio u take, it will be 25,00,000 clicks.Minimal pay for click is $0.11 for us.So if the ad people are giving them $.50 for a click,WB will be getting $12,50,000 in a week which is a very good/huge amount for any company,in which $2,75,000 belongs to us.Also ther is no gurantee for any payout. It is given only after 45 days.So with bank interest for 45 days the $2,75,000 will be double in 45 days time.
WB is getting this much of money because of our effort and our time,so there lies responsibility for WB to ensure gurentee for this $2,75,000 to be paid to us, since we people live in some other country we cannot fight for justice in US.

So.......?? Any response from Dean??

The impressions that shows on my widget repeat itself and its only about 3 or 4 cameras. How boring is that?

I think this is a good thing...
I am glad that WidgetBucks are actually going to email the users FIRST before suspension...

I used to be with Google adsense until one of my site users thought he was being helpful by clicking the ads constantly which got me banned, but Google would not even give me the chance to prove that it was not me clicking the ads.

Do You Aggre About That ???
