International CPM Q&A

After rolling out International CPM ads and reporting earlier this week, we've consolidated some of the most common questions into a Q&A here on the blog. Often times, questions are asked on our blog's comment threads that are already answered in the related post -- so we ask that you read through this Q&A entirely before posting a question.

I'm seeing a really low CPM for my international traffic? Why?
As we indicated in Wednesday's post, initial CPM rates will initially be "low" because WidgetBucks is building credibility with these advertisers. As of today, we are implementing more targeted campaigns for traffic coming from countries that will quickly represent a better CPM. Specifically, those are UK, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Brazil, India, and Japan. This means that an advertiser is delivered more targeted traffic -- and is therefore more willing to pay a higher CPM rate. Until now, advertisers are only willing to pay a base rate (or no rate at all) due to "international," untargeted ads.

How long does it take for WidgetBucks to earn credibility with advertisers?
Not long. In fact, publishers should see an increase in CPM rate over the next couple days as we expand targeting methods.

What kind of rates are you seeing across the board, and what are certain countries and regions seeing?
Rates are definitely varying by country (and see the question below on non- or low-paying regions). Most countries are ranging between $0.25 and $0.80 CPM, depending on ad size. In general, the 468x60, 728x90, and 160x600 ad sizes yield higher than the 300x250, and much more than 120x600 or 250x250.

Why is the new CPM tab in MyWidgets not showing any earnings, just impressions or all zeros?
If you see impression data but zero revenue, it means that the international traffic you are receiving for the widgets is coming from regions where advertisers aren't willing to pay. If you see no impressions data, then no international impressions are being received.

What are the non-paying countries or regions?
We are finding that advertisers are not willing to buy traffic from Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, China, Egypt, and Romania. Rates for other countries, such as Taiwan, parts of the Middle East, parts of S. America, and other regions earn under $0.10 CPM. It's really important to mention this is an advertiser decision regarding the value of that traffic, NOT WidgetBucks' decision. We repeat: this is an advertiser decision regarding the value of that traffic, NOT WidgetBucks' decision. I emphasize this because publishers, for whatever reason, will undoubtedly and incorrectly draw the conclusion it is solely WidgetBucks' decision.

I can't see the CPM ads on my site? Why not?
If you are in the US/Canada, then you will see the widget. Only site visitors outside of the US/Canada will see a CPM ad instead of the widget. Early in the rollout, we noticed a number of people asking about not seeing CPM ads internationally, but using a proxy server on our side, we have not been able to replicate this. In fact, on our blog threads, other commenters have indicated they can actually see the ads a publisher is indicating they can't see on their own sites. We continue to look into it and will monitor comments on this to see if it is persisting.

When will November earnings be posted on MyBucks?
Those earnings are now posted and available for viewing on MyBucks.

Publishers who have additional questions can check our Knowledge Base at the WidgetBucks Support Center (http://support.mpire.com). Tickets are being addressed there within 24-48 hours.

Why the hell is Romania included in the non-paid list?
For God's sake, we're in the europeean union...
When you were asked, you said that Romania will be included on the paid list...

Are you going to increase the rates for Romania in the future? or will allways remain 0.001$/CPM ?

just let us know, don't waste our time!

In Romania country, the rates is very very slow.
Please increase rates for Romania!

My advice to Widgetbucks is to show any ads (even widgetbucks own widget) instead of leaving our ad-space blank for countries of which they don't have ads. It simply breaks layout of our sites. So consider it, show anything even if it won't pay.

so many questions but where are the answers? I will wait... :p

I think for those of us who have placed the Widgetbucks ad and have no real hope of getting any further money due to the fact that advertisers are not willing to pay for the regions we are in ... Widgetbucks should honor whatever payment is due us since this was something we did in good faith, but that Widgetbucks failed to consider from the beginning.

Hi,

As a publisher based outside the US, I was curious to see how the new CPM ads would appear on my site.

I was horrified to see that my panel ad now shows a faked windows message which advises the visitor that they are the 999,999th visitor to my site.

This is so wrong on so many levels.

1. An ad should be clearly recognisable as ad and not spoof as a system message.

2. An ad should be truthful, this ad is a blatant lie.

3. An ad should be upfront about what it is advertising. This ad isn't.

I have now pulled the panel ad code as this is not how I wish to treat my visitors.

Could I ask the WidgetBucks team if you are happy to carry misleading ads like this, and if you intend to continue to do so? I have no intention of damaging my reputation through association with this advertiser.

Unknown said...

Oops! "Jack" comment is worth considering. Take steps against such ads quickly otherwise many publishers will leave widgetbucks soon. Those ads looks very cheap - and in return it shows our site as cheap. No professional even reasonable site publisher will continue widgetbucks if such ads continue.

New code is definitely not working properly, since the time i have add it, i haven't seen a single impression at widgetbucks login page.
I have 15-20% treffic from USA/Canada, 10% britain, 8% Germany, 40% from other european countries & rest from asia, and my account is not showing a single click or impression since i have add the new code. I am getting atleast 3000 visitors daily from above countries.
So please try to check your code,
its not working.

Just a couple of points your service sees me (an AOL UK member) as an AOL US member so still displays shopping ads the only way I can test the CPM ads is by using a UK based proxy site.

I would have put this in the support site but when I tried to sign up to the suport site it told me I was already on the database but when I tried to do a password request with the same email it told me I was not on the database.

I've never seen so many negative non-constructive comments in my life. This is my first time on Widget Buck's Blog, got it from the new ad feature and checked out. Um... to the users that are getting 1,200 impressions, but no clicks, think about what your ad is about and relevance to your site. Maybe no cares, but Widget Bucks works, try googling some idea's for your site to work. @Jack, your a funny dude, no sales man though. Do you know what a ad is? You also have the power to change the title of each widget ad you create to anything you want to say, anything, you could even have say, i like big buts and I can not lie. You control your own title. Oh, btw, I tried to keep my comments more pro and constructive, so if you have something to say in response to this, please feel free, or if you need help just post. Everyone else...there is no quick money, just promote your site and everything else will fall into place. Thats it I'm done, onward and upward for all!

Jack said...

@tonysage

Thanks for taking the time to respond, but did you take the time to understand the comments you were replying to?

The people complaining about low returns are talking about the CPM ads shown to non-US visitors. CPM advertising doesn't depend on clicks. You get paid per thousand impressions. Maybe you're coming from more of a US-centric viewpoint and weren't aware of the CPM rate concerns, but some of CPM rates quoted here don't compare favourably with industry norms.

My own point was also in relation to the CPM ads. Once Widgetbucks detects that the visitor is not from the US, they get a CPM ad from some third-party agency instead of a "proper" Widget. As publishers, we have no control over these ads. Nada. Zilch.

This is why I raised here my concern with disreputable ads appearing on my site, damaging my reputation and damaging WidgetBuck's too. I feel it would be in all of our interests for there to be some editorial control over these ads.

Jack, I understand more now than ever. But don't forget how corporations work, corps. go through channels they know will make profit.

Look at it this way, perhaps Widget Bucks and it's parent company have no control over it as far aggreements, contracts, etc. Maybe my point of view is of US perspective, I'm fine with that, maybe I can provide useful inspiring links for you to pose this question too, and maybe then the real bucks for your efforts will show. Check out these sites and let me know if at all the pros of blogging tell you.

iftitaj, what is your site address btw?

Also have you ever worked with Flash?
Have you any idea how long it might take, problems with timeliness you run into, embedding the right code so it's universal?

Has anybody worked with Flash, show of hands?

Me, and sometimes it's a pain in the kisser, why is ad sense popular?

I'll tell you, because it's cheaper for Google to run text based ads with a silly border that cost them less money to produce, no flash programs, no licenses to purchase, and no animator to pay a large sum too.

Don't forget people the purpose of Widget Bucks ads is to introduce a dynamic way of reaching the masses. It's NEW, INOVATIVE. Who ever has Flash on their site this isn't for you, the rest of you that don't, you best believe I'm hollering at you. *breath*

So everybody calm down, take a breath and give the team CONSTRUCTIVE feed back that we all as publishers can benefit from.

Holla at me.

Thanks!

Make it Happen!

@tonysage

I'm not sure what you're trying to say this time. "Corps go through channels they know will make profit". Corporations are going through the channels we provide. Their ads are appearing on our sites. We're bringing the eyeballs to their ads. The concern mainly being expressed on the board here is that the fee we get paid for those eyeballs is less than the market rate. But that's not even my biggest concern.

My biggest concern is about the quality of the ads. I've already seen untruthful ads on my site, thanks to Widgetbucks. Ads that the unwary might actually think weren't ads at all, but messages from me. For all I know, there might be all sorts of other unwelcome ads appearing on my site - ads for warez sites, porn sites, phishing sites, ebay sites for discredited sellers, who knows?

If anything makes me leave widgetbucks it will be quality of their CPM advertisers.

And just to correct the assumption you made in your post - I'm not publishing the ads on a blog, but on an internationally popular web site.

I've been an ecommerce professional for a decade now, I make my living from it. I sell my services on SEO among other things.

I appreciate your positive, cheerleading outlook. Just be aware that when you misdirect it, it can be grating.

First of all your point of view that each ad is created separately seems not feasible. With this era of sophisticated databases, its all database-game. For Example, they stored picture, price, name, etc of each product in database & then developed a script/code which make such widget (Flash) in real-time --- that means they only have to add products' main details in database.

Thats my point of view, I don't know how widgetbucks works. But you point of view that each widget is to be created separately in Flash is wrong/not feasible in this era of technologies.

My site's address is iTaj Technologies
But its still in development phase but is online. :)

About your first query, I'm doing the same, I put back my old widgetbucks code on my site & now all users are seeing widgetbucks ads but only US/Canada users clicks count. No CPM in this case but its far better than cheap-looking ads.
